I am the Grandfather of the Management Team. Recently retired from The Oil and Gas Engineering and Construction Industry where I filled several roles recently retiring as Director of Projects for a Multi-National Engineering and Construction Company.
I applied for the WINGS 2014 Leadership Team position as I had the time available to concentrate on the Jamboree to help make it a memorable experience for everyone concerned, from staff to participants.
Born and raised in Glasgow where the primary youth organisation was the Boys Brigade, I grew up in that organisation before transferring into Scouting when my job brought me South. I have been in Scouting for 24 years, joining the Executive Committee of 1st Wargrave Scout Group when my eldest son joined Cubs. During the last two decades I have been involved at all levels of 1st Wargrave Scout Group including Chairman of the Exec, Venture Scout Leader and Group Scout Leader.
1st Wargrave is in the Loddon District of Berkshire so Windsor and WINGS has been on our doorstep. I have fond memories of WINGS2003, which I attended as a leader with the Wargrave Scouts in a baking hot Windsor Great Park.
In addition to WINGS, I have been fortunate enough to go camping in Normandy and Wales with the Venture Unit and to lots of family camps over the years where I have seen the very positive impact that scouting has on young people and their families.
Finally, although my photo might suggest I’m an expert horse rider I’ve not (yet!) mastered that skill. However, at 65 years young I think you are never too old to learn new things. I was learning to be a cowboy in Tombstone, Arizona this year – and if my years in scouting have taught me anything, it is that a thirst for adventure is something you never grow out of!
