Meet the sub camp team…
Deputy Sub Camp Leader: Sean Gillespie
“I’m a Scout Leader with over 25 years’ of experience in providing fun and adventure for Scouts in 5 different groups in both the UK and my native homeland – Australia.
With extensive Scouting, bushcraft and ultralight weight camping experience, today I am a Scout Leader at 1st Cold Ash Scout Group with 5 other leaders.
The section today has over 40 scouts, and camps out a minimum of 8 nights a year undertaking any number of high adventure activities.”
Sub Camp Welfare Liaison Manager: Lucy Neeve
“Hello my name is Lucy, and I’m from Canterbury, I’m 24 and work as a community support assistant.
My first big international camp was back in 2008 when I was on site services.
I came to wings in 2009 and was on the bell sub camp team.
An interesting fact about me is that I have a music degree and I’m currently working towards grade 8 piano.
I’m looking forward to a great camp at WINGS 2014!”
Sub Camp Programme Manager: Lauren Harris
“Hi everyone! My name’s Lauren and I’m twenty years old (will be by August anyway!).
I’m studying English Literature at the University of Kent but am originally from Cornwall.
I’m a qualified Leader in Guiding and assist at units in both Cornwall and Kent.
One of my favourite Guiding memories is WINGS 2009 which I attended as a participant. I met many interesting people from all over the world with whom I am still friends today, and had a fantastic experience.
Interesting facts:
- I will be studying abroad in Canada next Autumn
- I do many sports including lacrosse, horse riding and netball
- I am working on my Queen’s Guide Award”
Sub Camp Food and Logistic’s Manager: Graeme Stafford
“Hello, my name is Graeme.
I am 27 and the Sub Camp Food and Logistics Manager for Archaeology sub camp.
I have been in scouting now for 5 years and run a troop in Stalybridge, Greater Manchester East.
I went to the 22nd world scout Jamboree in Sweden as an assistant unit leader.
The experience of a Jamboree is amazing even if you are a unit leader you still get so much out of meeting other people and taking part in other cultures.
I also organise the district events, so that’s the swimming Gala, the district trip to Belgium for the remembrance parade and our Olympic competition in 2012. On camp my job will be looking after equipment, food distribution, fixing, repairing, begging and borrowing. If you need any equipment I am here (unless I am somewhere else of course!)”
Sub Camp Communications Manager: Sam Gale
“I am Sam Gale, the Sub Camp Communications Manager. I am 19 years old, and this is my first jamboree as a member of the team!
I attended WINGS 2009 when I first joined explorers, and I had an incredible time, so this is the perfect opportunity to ensure that people have the same, incredible experience that I did!
In Scouting, I am a Scout Section Assistant, and also a SectionAssistant for the Beavers in the local area.”
Sub Camp Team Member: James Gibbons
“Hi – my name is James Gibbons . I’m currently 17 years old and still at school in Berkshire, but I hope to go to University later this year to study for a BA in Musical Theatre, simply because I love to sing!
I’ve been in Scouts since the age of 6 and over the years have taken part in many outdoor Scouting activities including some Kayaking expeditions.
I’m currently a Young Leader with a beaver colony – it’s great to work with young children and watch them develop (and know that I’m helping them to do so).
By WINGS 2014 I will be 18 so this will be my first experience of being a leader at an International event – and I’m very excited about it! I love anything relating to history – so was thrilled to be offered the chance to join the Archaeology sub camp. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you in August 2014.”
Sub Camp Team Member: Beth Kent
“Hi, i’m Beth Kent. I have been in Scouts since age 10 (1999!) and am now involved in Scouting in Berkshire, although I live in Brighton.
I was part of the Bell sub-camp team at WINGS 2007 and loved it! I’m looking forward to meeting this year’s “archaeology” sub-camp participants and discovering more!”
Sub Camp Team Member: Trinh Pham
“Hello There! I’m Trinh and I’ll be your token American during our week together. I’ve been a Girl Scout since 8 years old and still love it enough to be a leader to a Junior troop (4th-5th grade girls.)
This will be my 3rd time at WINGS and 2nd as a staff member. I’ve had the privilege to camp in Japan and Germany with the Boy Scouts of America.
As Depeche Mode sings, “I just can’t get enough.”
I love performing improvised comedy though first impressions, I am really shy. Should anyone have any questions regarding Miley Cyrus, Duck Dynasty, or why is it called “Football” if it is seldom kicked, ask the other American on staff.”
Sub Camp Team Member: Wendy Mercer
“I have enjoyed supporting Guiding for over 20 years. In that time I have been fortunate to run a couple of Guide Units, start a New Rainbow unit and be District Commissioner.
I believe this experience gave me the skill set and confidence to return to a working environment after time out. Now I offer 1st aid training to local groups.
I have been to our local Jamboree, WINGS three times, as a unit guider, and on a Sub Camp. My memory of Concorde taking off on the Sunday morning, shaking me out of my slumber!, and the excited faces as my Guides mixed with International and local fellows. Magic memories.
As I enjoy working with people I applied and was lucky to be accepted as a Games Maker, based at Eton and Dorney for the Rowing and Canoeing. A fantastic privilege.”
